January is about more than a fresh start, it’s about building habits that support your wellbeing for the long term. In the last 5 years there has never been greater awareness highlighting the need for people to look after their physical and mental health. From increased movement in any form, to reduced alcohol consumption, the landscape is a broad one.

The culmination is that people are trying to find their own version of a set of practices and routines to improve their mental wellbeing and activities that make them feel good.

Here at MYP, we’re passionate about topics such as mental well being, physical health and exercise. So in this week’s blog, we’re going to be examining what progressive health and wellbeing is, before showcasing some of the best wellbeing facilities and services in Manchester that you can use in 2026.

We’ll outline a range of different gyms and what they specialise in, for instance, if you prefer a HIIT workout, or you want something a little slower, we’ll give you specific organisations that can offer what you want, without having to leave your home. We will also offer some areas of focus if movement of that nature isn’t your thing, but you’re still looking to focus on your wellbeing in 2026.

What Is Progressive Health And Wellbeing?

Over the past five years, the progressive health and wellbeing space has grown rapidly. More and more people are embracing a joined-up approach to physical and mental wellbeing, recognising the impact it can have on living a healthier, more balanced life, especially when working busy 9-5 schedules. To set the scene, it’s worth exploring what progressive health and wellbeing actually means and how it differs from traditional exercise.

At its core, progressive health and wellbeing takes a holistic view of both mind and body, focusing on improving how people engage with movement and exercise as a whole. Rather than simply turning up at the gym, it looks to address underlying issues, creating more meaningful and long-term change.

The movement first gained traction through fitness influencers and communities in Los Angeles, before spreading to London and more recently, Manchester.

A key part of this approach is a stronger focus on mental health and the positive role activities such as yoga, HIIT and accessible forms of exercise can play. Mental wellbeing influences every part of daily life, and when it’s neglected it can hold people back from reaching their potential. Progressive health and wellbeing brings physical activity and mental health together, helping people better understand the wider impact that looking after themselves can have on their overall quality of life.

Another growing trend within progressive health and wellbeing is a more mindful approach to alcohol. Many people are choosing to gradually reduce their consumption as they become more aware of the impact alcohol can have on sleep, energy levels, mental clarity and overall health. Here at MYP we conducted a survey to understand if people consume less alcohol than they did compared with 3 years ago. With over 170+ votes, 76% of those people said they do consume less alcohol, with 24% voting they consume the same. This highlights a shift in the way of thinking towards alcohol. With coming into the new year there is a higher focus on general health and wellbeing.

That said, wellbeing doesn’t have to mean opting out of social life. Manchester’s social scene is a huge part of what makes the city special, and people still want to enjoy after-work drinks, celebrations and weekend plans without feeling like they’re missing out or having to explain their choices.

This is where the rise of high-quality alcohol-free alternatives comes in. Brands such as Athletic Brewing who have won over one hundred global taste awards, are changing the perception of alcohol-free beer. Offering great-tasting options that still feel like a treat in social settings. Whether you’re heading to the pub after a workout, meeting friends for a midweek catch-up, or simply looking to reduce alcohol without sacrificing the ritual of a drink, alcohol-free beers can make the transition feel inclusive rather than restrictive. Athletic Brewing set out to completely reimagine the brewing process, not to remove alcohol, but to redefine the drink. Therefore giving you a range of exceptional alcohol-free beers that deliver full flavour, without affecting the day after.

This alternative allows people to stay connected to Manchester’s vibrant social scene while still prioritising their wellbeing, striking a healthier balance without sacrificing enjoyment and great taste!

Keen Runner? Why Not Join Our Sister Run Club – Manchester Run Club?

Exercising in a gym is fantastic but sometimes nothing beats lacing up your running trainers and pounding the pavements. We’re big fans of running here at MYP so in 2021 we decided to set up a virtual running club on the popular app Strava. Since then it has become an in person run club, for everyone. Rebranded Manchester Run Club in 2023. So, if you fancy getting into running in 2026, join MRC. Simply download the Strava app (if you haven’t already), search for Manchester Run Club’, and hit ‘Join’! Members are encouraged to give ‘Kudos’ (similar to a ‘Like’ on Facebook) and comment when other people have posted their latest run time, all with the goal of encouraging people and improving mental health through running. We’ll be sharing popular 5k to 10k routes around Manchester.

Wellbeing Looks Different for Everyone

Wellbeing isn’t one-size-fits-all. For some, it might be pushing hard in the gym or training towards a specific goal, but for others it’s much simpler. A cup of tea, a chat with friends, a face mask, or getting an earlier night’s sleep. All of these small moments play a role in supporting your mental and physical wellbeing, and none are more ‘right’ than the other.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of health and wellbeing trends, but you don’t have to do everything at once. Setting unachievable goals can often lead to burnout or demotivation. Instead, focusing on one small, manageable step at a time can make a huge difference. Even choosing just one positive habit is a win, and your future self will thank you for it.
